Fish are the engines of any Aquaponics system. You may want to grow fish for consumption or you may wish to keep them just for asthetics but either way you need them to create the nutrients for your plants.
Goldfish
Almost any fresh water fish can be used for aquaponics although a very common choice is the Copper Feeder. These are sold in most pet stores as feeders and as such are reasonably priced.
They are very easy to look after and can tolerate a wide spectrum of water conditions.This makes them very usefull in small systems or as the kickstarters to the nutrification of larger systems.
